Dhaka, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Reports from Dhaka indicate a troubling rise in violence against minorities in Bangladesh, with two Hindu individuals killed in separate incidents. The victims include a man and a woman, prompting renewed concerns over the safety of minority communities in the country.
In one incident, 45-year-old jeweler Alif Chandra Dutta was murdered on Monday night in the Mahadebpur sub-district of Naogaon. Local media state that he was attacked with a sharp weapon while returning home from his jewelry shop. According to the Daily Sun, Dutta left his store at around 8:30 PM and was ambushed near his home in Dulalpara shortly before 9 PM.
The assailants reportedly stole 60 grams of gold and seven lakh Bangladeshi Taka before fleeing the scene. Family members and locals rushed the injured Dutta to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Mahadebpur police station’s officer in charge, Omar Faruk, confirmed the incident, stating, “It is not yet clear whether this was merely a robbery or if there was another motive behind it.” He added that legal proceedings are underway.
In a separate case, 45-year-old Rani Sushil was stabbed to death inside her home. This attack occurred at approximately 7:30 PM in the Hoanak Union area. An unidentified individual attempted to break into her house and attacked her when she raised an alarm while cooking.
According to police and local sources, the assailant, upon being noticed, allegedly silenced her and stabbed her multiple times before escaping. Locals transported the wounded Rani to the Chakaria sub-district health center, where she was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Abdus Sultan, officer in charge of the Maheshkhali police station, stated, “Preliminary information suggests an unknown person attempted to break in for theft. Upon being spotted, the housewife raised an alarm, prompting the attacker to strike her with a knife and flee. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect.”
These incidents come on the heels of a brutal attack in Rangpur city, where retired Hindu teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three family members were recently murdered. Reports indicate a concerning trend of violence against minorities, particularly the Hindu community, which has seen an increase in attacks over recent times. Such incidents were also prevalent during the tenure of the previous interim government led by Yunus and continue under the current Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) administration.
