New Delhi, August 2: The Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s monsoon session is set to commence on August 3. Ahead of the session, the opposition has called for an extension of its duration. They argue that there are numerous pressing issues facing the state that cannot be adequately discussed in just a few days. Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana assured that the opposition will be given ample time to express their views as per the rules.
Speaker Mahana stated, “Any topic that the opposition raises through a notice will be given full time for discussion. There will be no reduction in anyone’s allotted time. The opposition has its own agenda, ideas, and policies, and they will have the opportunity to speak freely. It is the government’s responsibility to respond to the issues raised by the opposition. The opposition should also adhere to democratic values and maintain the decorum of the house while presenting their views.”
Aradhna Mishra, leader of the Congress legislative party, noted, “Today, a meeting of all parties was held before the monsoon session, where we presented our proposal to the government. The duration of this session is very limited. We all know how many serious issues exist in Uttar Pradesh that require discussion.”
Leader of the Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey expressed the desire for discussion in the assembly but criticized the government for not adopting a positive stance on their suggestions. He stated that this often leads to disruptions in the house. “We want to discuss the electricity crisis, unemployment, the closure of schools, and issues related to farmers. The government should adopt a cooperative attitude,” he added.
State Minister Kapil Dev Agarwal responded by stating that the government is fully prepared for the monsoon session. He emphasized that if the opposition has questions, they should raise them in the assembly. “The government is ready to answer every question. However, if the opposition creates a ruckus, boycotts, or repeatedly disrupts, it indicates they lack substantial issues for discussion,” he remarked.
Samajwadi Party MLA Ravidas Malhotra argued that discussing the problems of Uttar Pradesh, with a population of 250 million, in a three-day session is impractical. He demanded that the monsoon session be extended to at least ten days. He also mentioned that the Samajwadi Party would raise the issue of the alleged embezzlement related to the Ram Temple donations in the assembly and call for an investigation by a current or retired High Court judge.
Additionally, SP MLA Mohammad Faheem and other legislators indicated that a meeting will be held under the leadership of party president Akhilesh Yadav to decide which key issues will be raised during the monsoon session.
