Violence Erupts Again in Manipur as Woman Killed Amid Ethnic Clashes

Kamjong, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Kamjong district on Friday night, resulting in the tragic shooting death of a woman and the destruction of several homes. Following the incident, local authorities imposed a curfew to regain control and maintain law and order.

The police reported that the violence occurred in Chassad village, predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community, within the Naga-majority Kamjong district. The victim, identified as Domkhonei Taothang, was a mother of five. She suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and died shortly after.

According to sources, the clashes began when suspected armed Kuki groups opened fire on security personnel stationed for duty. In response, security forces retaliated, leading to an exchange of gunfire that continued into Saturday morning.

Reports indicate that several individuals from both sides sustained injuries, and at least four homes were set ablaze. However, officials have not yet provided a confirmed count of casualties or the extent of injuries.

In response to the escalating violence, the Kamjong district administration enforced a curfew within a 400-meter radius of the Chassad police gate junction. The district magistrate issued orders under Section 163 of the Indian National Security Act (BNSA), prohibiting gatherings of five or more people, the carrying of firearms and other dangerous items, and movement within restricted areas. Exemptions apply to on-duty security personnel, magistrates, and those involved in essential services, as well as individuals who obtain special permission from the district magistrate or the Kamjong superintendent of police.

The Kuki community has expressed outrage over the alleged arrest and detention of volunteers from Chassad village, leading to protests by a group of women. The Kuki Human Rights Forum (KHRF) claimed that Taothang was shot during this demonstration, resulting in her death on Friday night.

Additionally, reports emerged of unknown assailants setting fire to homes belonging to Tangkhul Naga villagers on the night of October 9-10. While injuries have been reported on both sides, official confirmation is still pending.

Various Kuki tribal organizations, including the Kuki Human Rights Forum, Kuki Students Organization, and the Kuki Civil Society Organization Working Committee, have condemned the woman’s killing. They are demanding stringent action against the security personnel responsible for the incident.

The recent violence in Manipur has raised fresh concerns about security in a state that has long been plagued by ethnic tensions and violent incidents.
