Modi and Canada’s PM Carney Discuss Strengthening Ties and Finalizing CEPA

New Delhi, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India engaged in a phone conversation with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday. The two leaders welcomed the growing connection between Canada and India over the past year, highlighting areas such as finance, defense, security, and artificial intelligence. They emphasized the importance of continuing this momentum.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to swiftly concluding discussions on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aimed at doubling bilateral trade by 2030. They also acknowledged the ongoing historic Team Canada trade mission in India, led by International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, and welcomed Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to New Delhi this week. This mission focuses on advancing shared priorities in trade, energy, and people-to-people connections.

Discussions also touched on the geopolitical instability in the Indo-Pacific region and the need for reliable partners in energy and agriculture. Prime Minister Carney expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Modi’s leadership in efforts toward a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.

The leaders praised the recent bilateral security talks held in India, which are part of ongoing engagements at the national security advisor level concerning security and law enforcement. They agreed to maintain close contact ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Canada in December.

According to information shared by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, India is the largest source of immigrants to Canada across most categories, with 392,810 study permit holders of Indian citizenship expected in 2024. The 2021 federal census indicated that over 1.8 million Canadians are of Indian descent.

In India, Canada is represented by its High Commission in New Delhi, with consulates in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai, as well as trade offices in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Conversely, India is represented in Canada by a High Commission in Ottawa and consulates in Toronto and Vancouver. The deepening ties between the two nations are set to be highlighted during meetings between Prime Ministers Carney and Modi at the G7 summit in Canada in June 2025 and the G20 summit in South Africa in November 2025, alongside the announcement of a shared roadmap for future cooperation during Minister Anand’s visit to India in October 2025.
