Bhubaneswar, July 1: Serious questions are being raised about Odisha’s education system. The opposition is demanding the resignation of the Education Minister following the discovery of significant errors in textbooks for grades one to eight. A fifth-grade English textbook was found to contain the Bollywood song “Nimbooda-Nimbooda.” The Education Minister stated that such mistakes will not be tolerated.
The lyrics of the popular Bollywood song “Nimbooda-Nimbooda” were published almost verbatim in the fifth-grade English textbook used in government schools in Odisha.
In response to the incident, the state government has taken the matter seriously. Nityananda Gond, the Minister of School and Mass Education in Odisha, emphasized that such negligence is unacceptable and that revised textbooks will soon be made available to students.
This issue is linked to the English textbook for fifth-grade students in government schools. As soon as this error was revealed, questions began to arise. Education experts have labeled it a significant mistake. Those involved in education argue that textbooks are a crucial foundation for children’s learning and should undergo thorough checks at multiple levels before publication.
The inclusion of a film song instead of poetry, stories, or educational chapters is considered a major oversight. The Education Minister announced the formation of a committee to investigate and monitor the situation.
It is noteworthy that after discovering major errors in textbooks from grades one to eight, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Manjhi suspended four senior officials, including the former director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Manoj Padhi. Disciplinary action against six others will follow based on the investigation report presented by a committee chaired by the Development Commissioner.
The controversy surrounding the textbooks escalated after approximately 1,678 errors were found in recently published materials, leading to criticism from opposition parties and educators.
