Odishas 460-Kilometer Coastal Region Critical for National Security, Says DGP Vinayatosh Mishra

Bhubaneswar, June 5: The Director General of Police (DGP) of the Crime Investigation Department, Vinayatosh Mishra, made a significant statement regarding the security of Odisha’s coastline. He emphasized that the 460-kilometer long coastal area is extremely sensitive not only for the state but for the entire country.

While addressing reporters, DGP Mishra stated, “The marine area of Odisha spans over 460 kilometers, and its security is crucial for the state.”

He noted that a decade ago, there were insufficient resources to tackle maritime crimes. If a criminal escaped by sea, the police found themselves helpless.

“Recognizing this shortcoming, the government has provided us with several resources. Eighteen police stations have been established across Odisha, and boats have also been made available,” he added.

DGP Mishra described coastal security as a multifaceted challenge, involving geopolitical interests and economic activities. Approximately 18 to 20 central and state agencies operate in this region.

He mentioned that a seminar was organized to enhance coordination among all agencies and clarify their roles.

Citing the Balianta case, he explained that when the investigation was taken over by CID, all individuals present at the scene were identified. “They can broadly be categorized into two groups: those directly involved in the violence and those who were merely spectators,” he said.

Vinayatosh Mishra asserted that coastal security is no longer just a law-and-order issue; it has evolved into a matter of economic, strategic, and national security.

He acknowledged that significant progress has been made in recent years with the cooperation of both central and state governments, but challenges remain. The DGP urged all relevant agencies to work together more effectively to swiftly control any illegal activities in the maritime region. The Odisha government and police department are actively working to enhance surveillance in the coastal area, implement modern equipment, and conduct training programs.
