Bhubaneswar, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Prasanna Acharya, the opposition leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), has voiced strong opposition to the MMDR Amendment Act 2026, warning of substantial revenue losses for Odisha. He called for the act’s repeal during a recent interview in Bhubaneswar.
Acharya stated that they submitted a memorandum to the Governor, urging him to forward it to the President. He highlighted that the recently introduced bill in Parliament would severely impact states like Odisha, which has already incurred losses of around ₹1 lakh crore. He estimated that the state would face annual losses ranging from ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 crore.
“This represents a significant setback for Odisha,” Acharya remarked. “We are puzzled by the central government‘s intentions. Instead of empowering states, it appears to be undermining them, and we do not agree with this approach.” He announced plans for protests, emphasizing that the people of Odisha are also rallying against the act.
Additionally, he mentioned that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has urged for a special assembly session to discuss the matter in detail. However, he expressed disappointment that no concrete decisions have been made by the government so far. Until the central government takes action, protests from the people of Odisha will continue. The Governor has assured that the memorandum will be sent to the President.
