Guwahati: Chief Ministers and ministers from Northeast states praised the Union Budget 2026-27 on Sunday, calling it a visionary roadmap steering the country towards the goal of a ‘Developed India’ by 2047.
The leaders highlighted that the budget presents a clear 25-year blueprint focused on inclusive growth, infrastructure expansion, job creation, and regional empowerment.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on the ‘Developed India Budget 2026’, saying it balances India’s global ambitions with grassroots development.
On social media platform X, Sarma stated, “This reform-oriented budget will bring meaningful benefits to Assam and the eastern region.”
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also praised the Prime Minister and Finance Minister, describing the budget as a visionary guideline to transform India into a developed nation by 2047.
He wrote on X, “From production and world-class infrastructure to health and tourism; from rural empowerment to adopting cutting-edge AI; and from modern sports complexes to sacred pilgrimage sites, this budget energizes the aspirations of youth, women, and farmers across every village, town, and city in the country.”
Nagaland’s Higher Education and Tourism Minister Temjen Imna Along said the budget strongly signals that services, education, and tourism will be at the heart of India’s next phase of development, directly benefiting Nagaland.
He welcomed proposals like establishing university townships along key corridors and forming a high-level permanent committee on ‘Education to Employment and Entrepreneurship’, which underline the need to link higher education with employment and entrepreneurship—a reform Nagaland has already begun.
Regarding tourism, Along appreciated the upgrade of the National Council for Hotel Management to a National Hospitality Institute, a pilot scheme to train 10,000 certified tourist guides, and the creation of a National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid. He noted these initiatives will professionalise tourism and create new opportunities for local youth.
Mizoram Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar said the budget places tourism at the centre of job creation, cultural preservation, and sustainable regional development, aligning with Mizoram’s priorities.
He added that the emphasis on environmentally sensitive tourism, professional skill development, hospitality education, and digital documentation signals a shift from quantity-based to value and experience-based tourism models.
Welcoming the increase in public capital expenditure to ₹12.2 lakh crore, Hmar said it will improve connectivity to the last mile and facilitate easier access to internal tourism circuits.
Arunachal Pradesh Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, responsible for tourism, education, rural development, and parliamentary affairs, said the budget reflects a mature understanding of India’s diversity, focusing on capacity building, connectivity, and cultural continuity.
He noted that the emphasis on ‘Pravritti Uday’, sustained capital expenditure, and better financial transfers under the 16th Finance Commission lay a strong foundation for decentralised and long-term development in Arunachal Pradesh.
Sona observed that the budget marks a shift from welfare to capacity building. Initiatives such as university townships, district-level girls’ hostels, and the permanent committee on education to employment are especially significant for remote and border areas.
He highlighted how the National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid will support digital documentation of heritage, promote high-value agriculture like agarwood, expand SHG marts under the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ framework, and improve connectivity to boost rural livelihoods and women entrepreneurship.
Referring to the proposed Buddhist Circuit plan, Sona said it will strengthen Arunachal Pradesh’s role as a civilisational bridge between India and Asia.
Northeast leaders concluded that the Union Budget 2026-27 offers a balanced and future-ready roadmap linking education, infrastructure, cultural preservation, and economic opportunities, making the region an active participant in building a ‘Developed India’.
