Nominations Open for Rajya Sabha Elections Scheduled on June 18

New Delhi, June 1: Nominations have commenced for 27 Rajya Sabha seats, including biennial elections and by-elections, along with elections for three state legislative councils. The Election Commission has issued a formal notification regarding the elections.

In a statement, the Election Commission announced that if there is a contest, voting will take place on June 18 from 8 AM to 4 PM, followed by vote counting at 5 PM.

The statement read, “The Commission has released notifications concerning the election schedule and has appointed returning officers and assistant returning officers for both biennial and by-elections. Details of these appointments were published on Monday in the Gazette of India/state gazettes.”

Nominations for all these elections began on Monday at 11 AM. The Election Commission has set the deadline for filing nominations as June 8, by 3 PM.

According to the statement, “Scrutiny of nomination papers for each election will be conducted by the respective returning officers on June 9, 2026. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is set for June 11.”

Biennial elections for Rajya Sabha seats will be held in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Mizoram.

The Election Commission also announced by-elections for Rajya Sabha seats in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha, with one seat to be contested in each state.

In Bihar, biennial elections will take place for nine seats in the state legislative council. Karnataka will also hold biennial elections for seven seats in its legislative council.

A solitary by-election for the state legislative council will occur in Bihar for the seat vacated by former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after his election to the Rajya Sabha. The nine seats in Bihar are due for re-election as their members’ terms end on June 28. Among the outgoing members are Dr. Kumud Verma, Professor Ghulam Gauss, Mohammad Farooq, Bhishma Sahni, Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha, Sanjay Prakash, Sameer Kumar Singh, Samrat Chaudhary, and Sunil Kumar Singh.

Notably, the seats previously held by Samrat Chaudhary and Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha are already vacant, as both leaders were elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
