Patna, April 14: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhawan on Tuesday. This move clears the way for the formation of a new NDA government in Bihar. Kumar, along with Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and Minister Vijay Chaudhary, left the Chief Minister’s residence and arrived at Lok Bhawan to officially resign.
Reports suggest that for the first time, a government led by the BJP is set to take charge in Bihar. However, the name of the new Chief Minister has not yet been announced. The BJP’s state office has been decorated in anticipation of the upcoming changes. Meanwhile, the BJP will hold a meeting of its legislative party. Although the party has not officially declared its candidate for the next Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is seen as a strong contender.
Kumar’s resignation is viewed as the end of the Nitish era in Bihar. He took the oath as Chief Minister after the NDA secured a majority in the assembly elections last November. Nitish Kumar’s political journey spans four decades. Speculation about his departure from the Chief Minister’s role to focus on Delhi politics arose after his recent election to the Rajya Sabha.
In addition to his resignation as Chief Minister, he also stepped down from the Legislative Council. His political career began in 1985 with the Janata Dal when he won his first assembly election. In 1994, he participated in a significant rebellion against Lalu Prasad, leading to the formation of the Janata Dal (George) under George Fernandes, which later transformed into the Samata Party.
This was a pivotal moment for Kumar, as he began to carve out his own political identity separate from Lalu. His first term as Chief Minister was in 2000, but his government fell within a week due to a lack of majority in the coalition. He made a remarkable comeback in 2005, ending Lalu Prasad Yadav’s 15-year rule and ushering in a ‘new era’ in Bihar. For nearly two decades, Nitish Kumar governed without facing any serious political challenges.
