New Delhi, 2 January: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken significant action in the 2023 Bengaluru jail radicalisation case by filing a chargesheet against three more accused. The case is linked to the banned terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba.
According to an NIA press release, the second supplementary chargesheet filed on Thursday includes the names of Anees Fatima, Chan Pasha A, and Dr. Nagaraj S. The agency has accused them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosives Act, Prevention of Corruption Act, and the Karnataka Jail Act.
The NIA took over the investigation from the local police in October 2023. Earlier, the agency had filed chargesheets against nine accused, including the absconding Junaid Ahmed. The case was initially registered by Bengaluru City Police in July 2023 after uncovering a conspiracy to carry out terrorist attacks in the city. During the probe, weapons, ammunition, and digital devices were seized.
As per the NIA, the accused were planning terrorist attacks in Bengaluru with the intent to harm the country’s sovereignty and security. These activities were aimed at advancing Lashkar-e-Taiba’s interests and included a plot to help T Nasir, serving life imprisonment in various terrorist cases, escape while being taken to court. Nasir was an undertrial in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blasts case.
The three newly charged accused include Anees Fatima, identified as the mother of absconding accused Junaid Ahmed. Investigations revealed that she provided logistic support and funds to T Nasir, who was imprisoned at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. Acting under her son’s instructions, she handled hand grenades and walkie-talkies and played a key role in maintaining communication among the accused. The NIA also found that she sheltered main accused Salman Khan and helped arrange travel documents to facilitate his escape to Dubai. Salman Khan was later extradited from the Republic of Rwanda to India.
The second accused, Chan Pasha A, was posted as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in Bengaluru City Armed Reserve-South. He allegedly accepted illegal bribes from Salman Khan and, in return, shared sensitive information related to T Nasir’s escort duty, with whom he was already in contact.
The third accused, Dr. Nagaraj S, was deputed as a psychiatrist at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail hospital. He is accused of smuggling mobile phones illegally into the jail and selling them to inmates for cash. One of these phones reached T Nasir, who used it to communicate with his co-accused and advance the terrorist conspiracy.
The NIA has made it clear that the search and investigation for other absconding accused are ongoing and more revelations are expected in the near future.
