New Developments in NEET Students Death Case: POCSO Sections Added, CBI to Investigate

Patna, March 6: A significant development has emerged in the suspicious death of a NEET student in Patna. The Bihar government has amended its previous notification to include sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The Patna police have also added Section 64 of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections to the First Information Report (FIR). With this amendment, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will now be able to legally investigate the case under these sections and oversee all aspects of the inquiry.

On January 6, the student was found unconscious in her hostel room. The hostel administration and fellow students rushed her to the hospital, where doctors reported her condition as critical. After five days of treatment, she passed away on January 11.

Initially, the police investigation focused on the possibility of suicide. However, the victim’s family consistently alleged rape and murder, claiming attempts were being made to portray the case as a suicide.

When the FIR was filed at the Chitragupt Nagar police station on January 9, POCSO Act sections were not included. Initially, investigative agencies treated the incident as a suspicious suicide. As the investigation progressed, serious questions began to arise regarding this initial assessment.

When the case reached court, the judge questioned why POCSO Act sections were not applied, given that the victim was a minor and there were allegations of sexual assault. Following the court’s stern remarks, the Bihar government reviewed the case and issued a revised notification to include POCSO Act sections.

This incident occurred at the Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in the Chitragupt Nagar area of Patna, where many students reside while preparing for competitive exams like the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
