In a key development for medical aspirants across India, the NEET UG 2025 counselling process is likely to begin from July 1, according to observations made during a hearing in the Delhi High Court. While the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has not officially released any notice, the court discussion has sparked expectations about an early start to the admission process.
What Did the Court Say?
The hint came during a hearing of a petition filed by a NEET UG 2025 candidate, who had experienced a biometric verification glitch on exam day, leading to stress and performance issues. The petitioner requested additional marks as compensation. During arguments, the student’s lawyer urged the court for a timely resolution, citing that counselling may start from July 1. Although unofficial, this statement has brought relief to lakhs of students awaiting clarity.
NEET 2025 Result Overview
This year, over 22 lakh students appeared for the NEET UG exam, out of which 12.36 lakh have qualified. However, the availability of MBBS seats remains limited. There are currently 780 medical colleges in India, offering approximately 1,18,190 MBBS seats, underscoring the intense competition among aspirants.
How NEET Counselling is Structured
NEET counselling is conducted in two tiers:
All India Quota (AIQ): Managed by MCC, covering 15% of MBBS/BDS seats in government colleges across states.
State Quota: Constitutes the remaining 85% of government college seats, handled by individual state medical authorities.
Colleges Covered Under MCC Counselling
MCC’s role isn’t limited to AIQ seats alone. It also handles counselling for 100% seats in several prestigious institutes, including:
All AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences)
JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research)
BHU (Banaras Hindu University)
AMU (Aligarh Muslim University)
15% AIQ seats of DU, IP University, VMMC, ABVIMS, and other central universities
Official Notice Still Pending
As of now, the MCC website (mcc.nic.in) has not published any formal notification regarding the counselling schedule. However, based on the court’s proceedings, the first week of July is being considered a realistic window for the start of NEET UG 2025 counselling.
What Should Aspirants Do Now?
Medical aspirants are advised to:
Keep checking the official MCC website regularly.
Prepare relevant documents like NEET UG rank card, scorecard, domicile certificate, and category certificates.
Monitor state counselling portals for state quota admissions.
The official announcement is expected shortly, and students should stay alert to ensure they don’t miss key deadlines.
