New Delhi, June 29: The former Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will be laid to rest on July 4, nearly 130 days after his death. According to sources, Bihar’s Governor, Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain, and Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margerita, will represent India at the funeral and burial ceremonies.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has officially invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in these events. As reported by Iranian state media, the burial program for the former Supreme Leader will take place from July 4 to July 9. Official statements indicate that ceremonies for Khamenei and his family members will occur in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several family members lost their lives in an attack by the United States and Israel on February 28. According to a statement from the committee formed in Khamenei’s memory, his body will be displayed at Tehran Mosalla on July 4 and 5, 2026. A ceremony is scheduled for July 7, 2026, in Qom. Ultimately, Ayatollah Ali will be buried on July 9, 2026, at the shrine of the eighth Shia Imam in Mashhad, followed by ceremonies in Iran’s second-largest city.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei assumed leadership in 1989 after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the Islamic Revolution of 1979, resulting in the end of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s monarchy and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. While Khomeini was the ideological and political force behind the revolution, Khamenei strengthened and organized Iran’s political system, military, and Revolutionary Guard after becoming Supreme Leader.
Meanwhile, Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, does not hold any official political or constitutional position. Recent public absences or speculations regarding Mojtaba’s political activities have not been officially confirmed.
