Vijayawada, June 30: In a significant development regarding the alleged custodial death of 25-year-old Gade Sai Krishna, two head constables surrendered to the police on Monday. Ashok and Nani turned themselves in at the Suray Rao Pet ACP office.
Both officers, who served at the Krishna Lanka police station, reportedly went into hiding following the arrest of suspended Circle Inspector (Station House Officer) S.S.V.V. Nagaraju. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the case discovered that the two head constables had been aiding Nagaraju.
Nagaraju was arrested by the SIT on June 23, and a city court subsequently placed him under judicial remand until July 8. Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh High Court postponed the hearing on a habeas corpus petition filed by Sai Krishna’s mother, Vijaya Lakshmi, until Tuesday.
Reports indicate that the SIT submitted its preliminary report to the High Court, detailing the registered case and the actions taken so far. The SIT is investigating allegations against the suspended SHO, including wrongful detention, murder, and destruction of evidence.
A case was registered on June 19 under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) based on Vijaya Lakshmi’s complaint. She alleged that her son was tortured and beaten to death while in custody.
Last week, the SIT informed the lower court that Sai Krishna died due to injuries sustained while in custody. The court was also informed that CCTV footage from the police station had been deliberately deleted.
Sai Krishna, who had pending cases and non-bailable warrants against him, was arrested on May 6 in Markapuram and taken to the Krishna Lanka police station. The SIT reported that he was illegally detained and later went missing.
The court was told that to conceal the circumstances surrounding Sai Krishna’s death, his body was transported to an undisclosed location. Attempts were made to bury or cremate the body. The SIT is currently investigating the whereabouts of the remains.
