The weather in the National Capital Region (NCR) changed noticeably from Thursday night onwards. By Friday morning, the impact of strong winds that began late Thursday was clearly visible, as rain showers started in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and surrounding areas.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense and dark clouds are expected to cover the sky throughout the day, reducing the chances of sunshine. The combination of strong winds and cloud cover has caused a drop in daytime temperatures, making the cold feel more intense even during the day. The local IMD forecast for January 23 predicts a maximum temperature around 19 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 12 degrees Celsius.
The weather department has also indicated the possibility of light to moderate rainfall in different parts of the day, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km/h. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue on January 24, with the maximum temperature dropping to 17 degrees Celsius and the minimum to 7 degrees Celsius. On January 25, light to moderate fog is likely in the morning, with temperatures ranging between 17 and 6 degrees Celsius. January 26 is forecasted to have a maximum temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 7 degrees Celsius. No special weather warnings have been issued for these days.
The recent rainfall and strong winds have also positively affected air quality in the region. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) show partial improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI) in several areas.
In Ghaziabad, Indirapuram recorded an AQI of 267, Sanjay Nagar 290, while Loni remains in a severe category with an AQI of 390. Noida’s Sector 62 showed an AQI of 249, Sector 125 had 319, Sector 1 recorded 290, and Sector 116 had 296. Despite some improvements, many parts of Delhi continue to experience concerning pollution levels. Anand Vihar reported an AQI of 317, Ashok Vihar 335, Bawana 342, Chandni Chowk 326, Alipur 322, and the DTU area 312. However, some locations have shown progress by moving from the red zone to the orange zone, offering some relief to residents.
Weather experts explain that the combination of rain and strong winds will lead to a noticeable drop in maximum temperatures. This explains why the cold will be felt more acutely during the day, even if the minimum temperatures do not fall drastically.
