New Delhi, 30 December. The National Capital Region (NCR) is grappling with severe conditions as pollution and dense fog create a double blow amid the winter season. For two consecutive days, warnings of extremely dense fog have been issued. Meanwhile, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has crossed 450 in several areas.
The situation deteriorated so much that visibility dropped to zero in many parts last night, severely affecting road, rail, and air traffic. Data from various air quality monitoring centres in Delhi showed AQI readings of 451 at Anand Vihar, 433 at Ashok Vihar, 446 in Rohini, 449 at Wazirpur, and 432 at Chandni Chowk.
Other locations reported similarly hazardous levels: DTU Delhi recorded an AQI of 411, Siri Fort 410, Shadipur 401, Punjabi Bagh 426, Sonia Vihar 421, Bawana 368, Alipur 379, and Vivek Vihar 380. All these figures fall under the ‘severe’ category, posing serious health risks.
The condition remains critical in Noida and Ghaziabad as well. Noida’s Sector-1 reported an AQI of 433, while Sectors 125 and 116 recorded 388 each, and Sector 62 showed 372. Ghaziabad’s Vasundhara saw the AQI reach 459, with Sanjay Nagar at 393, Indirapuram at 382, and Loni at 360. This data clearly indicates that the entire NCR is under the grip of pollution.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), extremely dense fog is expected during the morning hours of 30 December, with dense fog continuing into the afternoon. The maximum temperature on the day was 21 degrees Celsius, and the minimum was 8 degrees Celsius, with humidity reaching up to 100 percent. A fog warning has also been issued for the morning of 31 December. However, light rain or drizzle is forecast for 1 January, which may provide some relief from pollution and fog.
The dense fog has caused significant difficulties for motorists. Traffic on highways has slowed considerably, with many areas facing jams and an increased risk of accidents.
