The National Capital Region (NCR) continues to experience intense cold waves, with temperatures dropping nearly 6 degrees Celsius due to significant weather changes. Residents are facing harsh cold conditions, compounded by dense fog during early mornings and late nights, which has reduced visibility and disrupted road and rail transport.
According to the India Meteorological Department, on 29 January, NCRโs maximum temperature is expected to be around 18 degrees Celsius, with a minimum near 7 degrees Celsius. Dense fog warnings have been issued for early morning hours. On 30 January, the maximum temperature is forecasted at 19 degrees Celsius and minimum at 8 degrees Celsius, with moderate fog likely.
The weather is expected to turn more unsettled on 31 January and 1 February. On 31 January, the maximum temperature may reach 20 degrees Celsius while the minimum could drop to 7 degrees Celsius. Rain showers accompanied by thunder and strong gusty winds are possible. A special alert has been issued for 1 February, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour throughout the day. Temperatures on this day are expected to range between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius.
Along with the cold, air quality remains a serious concern. In Noida, the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded was 299 in Sector-1, 291 in Sector-125, 287 in Sector-116, and 232 in Sector-62. Ghaziabad registered AQI levels of 331 in Indirapuram, 340 in Loni, 323 in Vasundhara, and 212 in Sanjay Nagar.
Delhiโs air quality is also poor, with Anand Vihar showing an AQI of 334, Rohini 311, RK Puram 316, Punjabi Bagh 302, Patparganj 306, Chandni Chowk 312, and Siri Fort 315. However, some areas such as Shadipur (138) and Aya Nagar (178) recorded relatively better air quality.
The meteorological department and pollution control board have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, especially urging elderly people and children to take extra precautions. They also warn to stay alert during rain and strong winds.
