Nation Honors Param Vir Chakra Winner Nirmaljeet Singh Sekhon with Air Force Marathon

New Delhi, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : On October 4, 2026, the nation came together to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Flight Lieutenant Nirmaljeet Singh Sekhon, a Param Vir Chakra recipient, with the ‘Sekhon Indian Air Force Marathon 2026.’ This event took place across multiple cities in India, including New Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and various northeastern states.

In New Delhi, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh participated in the marathon, which served as a tribute to Sekhon’s legacy. The Indian Air Force highlighted Sekhon as an ideal figure, embodying courage and dedication. The marathon featured categories of 21, 10, and 5 kilometers, allowing participants of all ages to join in remembrance.

Nirmaljeet Singh Sekhon is celebrated as the only Param Vir Chakra awardee from the Indian Air Force. His heroics during the 1971 war, where he valiantly engaged six Pakistani fighter jets, remain etched in the annals of history. On December 14, 1971, during an attack on the Srinagar airfield by Pakistani forces, Sekhon took to the skies as a GnAT pilot, successfully downing an enemy Sabre jet and inflicting significant damage on others.

His extraordinary bravery made him a formidable opponent for the Pakistani Air Force, and he defended his base until his last breath, ultimately sacrificing his life for the nation. The marathon, held for the second consecutive year, symbolizes not just a race but a heartfelt tribute to his patriotism, discipline, and valor.

As the sun rose over Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, thousands participated, united in their respect for Sekhon’s sacrifice. Runners from diverse backgrounds, ages, and languages shared a common spirit, dedicating their efforts to the country and Sekhon’s memory. Similar events unfolded in Chandigarh and Jodhpur, where both senior Air Force officials and civilians joined the marathon, reinforcing the collective remembrance of this national hero.
