Assam Chief Minister Inaugurates Bongaigaon Medical College, Emphasizes Development Agenda

Bongaigaon, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Bongaigaon Medical College on October 5, emphasizing the state’s commitment to its development agenda. He stated that this project exemplifies the principle of completing foundational work and subsequently inaugurating it.

Addressing the audience, Sarma noted that the college’s foundation was laid in 2021, and it has now been completed and officially opened. He highlighted the vital role of public support in development initiatives, asserting that “the power of your vote has enabled governments to implement such projects.”

Sarma reiterated his government’s philosophy that any project initiated should be completed and inaugurated. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to open the medical college, attributing its completion to divine blessings.

The inauguration is part of Assam’s broader efforts to enhance medical education and healthcare infrastructure beyond Guwahati and major urban centers. The state government is actively working on a policy to establish medical colleges in all districts, aiming to improve access to specialized healthcare and increase the availability of trained doctors.

In recent years, the government has launched several new medical colleges across various regions of Assam to strengthen its medical education network. This expansion aims to reduce the reliance on larger hospitals in Guwahati for patients from remote and rural areas.

The Bongaigaon Medical College is expected to serve patients from Bongaigaon and neighboring districts while providing local students with the opportunity to pursue medical studies close to home. The Assam government has consistently stated its long-term goal of opening at least one medical college in every district.

This initiative is being pursued alongside the expansion of hospitals, medical education facilities, and other healthcare infrastructure. The government links the expansion of medical colleges to the pressing need to increase the number of doctors and healthcare professionals in the state.

Sarma has frequently underscored the expansion of medical infrastructure as a crucial component of the state’s development strategy, particularly in improving healthcare access in areas outside major cities.
