Jaipur, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has called for the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene in the matter.
Gehlot’s comments come in response to ongoing controversies surrounding the Supreme Court‘s remarks on petitions challenging the Election Commission‘s operations and the “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR) of the voter list. He raised serious concerns about the credibility and impartiality of the Election Commission.
On Monday, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Election Commission and the central government regarding these petitions, but it declined to issue any interim orders for the suspension of the CEC. The court stated it would review the matter after receiving responses from the relevant authorities.
Gehlot emphasized that the Election Commission has earned credibility both nationally and internationally, often guiding other countries in conducting elections. However, he alleged that under Gyanesh Kumar’s leadership, the commission’s operations have raised significant questions about its impartiality.
Referencing allegations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding irregularities in the electoral process, Gehlot noted that such concerns have been raised before but have not received adequate attention. During a press conference, he criticized the CEC’s manner of engaging with the opposition, insisting that the head of the country’s election body should show respect to all political parties.
He stated that the Supreme Court’s proceedings have intensified the questions surrounding the Election Commission’s operations. The court highlighted that decisions made by the commission should be based on consensus or majority, and it clarified that it had not approved any altered version of Form 6.
Given the current circumstances, Gehlot suggested that the only option left is for Kumar to resign. He questioned why Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah have not intervened, asserting that the central government should ensure Kumar’s resignation to resolve the controversy, allowing both the ruling and opposition parties to focus on their responsibilities.
