Karnataka Jail Official Arrested for Allegedly Releasing Prisoner with Fake Supreme Court Order

Bengaluru, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Bengaluru police have arrested Somasekhar, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the northern region of the jail department, for allegedly releasing a life-sentence prisoner based on a forged Supreme Court order. The incident involves Shankar, who was serving a life sentence for murder.

Authorities claim that a fake document mimicking a Supreme Court order was created to facilitate Shankar’s release from prison in November 2018. The police are investigating the matter and have also arrested Srikanth, a Second Division Assistant accused of preparing the fraudulent order. At the time of the incident, Somasekhar was serving as the superintendent of Parappana Agrahara Central Jail.

Investigators are looking into how the fake order was generated and utilized, as well as the roles of the accused in the prisoner’s release. They are also exploring whether similar fraudulent activities occurred in other cases, raising concerns about the potential release of other inmates using forged documents.

This incident comes amid broader scrutiny of police integrity in Karnataka. According to data shared by former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and former Home Minister G. Parameshwara, 88 police personnel have faced criminal charges linked to various illegal activities. Siddaramaiah condemned the involvement of police officers in criminal acts as disgraceful and unacceptable, emphasizing the need for accountability within the police force.

In a recent address at an annual conference for police officials, Siddaramaiah expressed strong disapproval of criminal cases against police members, referencing a notorious ATM cash van robbery allegedly orchestrated by a head constable. He also highlighted drug-related cases uncovered by police from other states rather than local authorities, calling the situation shameful.

The state government has indicated that it is considering strict legal measures to prevent such incidents and ensure greater vigilance within the department.
