Thiruvananthapuram, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : The state of Kerala is set to unveil its ambitious ‘Brand Wayanad’ project, aimed at establishing Wayanad as a well-managed global tourism destination. The initiative will be launched on Tuesday by Tourism Minister P.C. Vishnunadh at the Vythiri Village Resort, with Agriculture Minister T. Siddique presiding over the event.
This project has gained significant support from Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, who has long advocated for promoting the region’s natural beauty, culture, and adventure tourism potential. The initiative is part of the VD Satheesan government’s 100-day action program.
‘Brand Wayanad’ seeks to elevate the region beyond its traditional identity as a hill station. The plan aims to develop Wayanad as a unique tourism zone that integrates nature, local life, agriculture, and tribal culture. Priyanka Gandhi has emphasized the need for improved infrastructure and extensive promotion of Wayanad as a tourist hotspot.
Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi has also highlighted the tourism potential of the district, stressing the importance of creating job opportunities and livelihoods for local residents through tourism.
Central to the ‘Brand Wayanad’ initiative is the concept of responsible tourism. This approach will modernize homestays and promote Wayanad as a safe and sustainable global tourism destination. Rather than just showcasing attractions, the focus will be on providing diverse experiences for visitors.
Tourists will be able to explore coffee plantations, savor local cuisine, engage with agricultural life, and appreciate the region’s tribal heritage and natural environment. Wayanad’s coffee, spices, traditional rice varieties, and honey will also be integrated into the tourism experience. The Geographical Indication (GI) tagged Wayanad Robusta coffee will be promoted globally through a ‘farm-to-cup’ model.
The initiative includes expanding the N Uru Heritage Village to better showcase Wayanad’s indigenous tribal culture. Additionally, a Tribal University and Heritage Knowledge Center will be established at a cost of ₹500 million.
The government also plans to launch the Wayanad CSR Exchange, run an e-waste-free campaign, and enhance corporate participation in the district’s development.
This initiative aims to redefine Wayanad’s tourism landscape, blending its natural beauty, local products, culture, and lifestyle into a distinct brand. The true test for the government will be how effectively it can manage this tourism initiative and increase the income of local residents.
