New Delhi, August 20: Monty Desai has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Canada men’s cricket team. He was appointed for his second term on May 1, 2026. Desai announced his resignation through a post on social media.
Desai expressed, “A brief chapter, yet a meaningful one. Every environment teaches you something. This experience has reinforced my belief that sustainable performance is built on time, trust, preparation, strong relationships, and collaboration.”
He added, “Thank you to the players, support staff, and everyone who joined me on this journey. I am grateful for the relationships formed, lessons learned, and opportunities to contribute.”
This was Desai’s second tenure with the team. Previously, he coached during the World Cricket League 2 campaign in Namibia in 2019.
Since his appointment on May 1, 2026, Desai led the team in two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League matches and two tri-series. Canada played one series at home and another in Scotland. With four matches remaining in the campaign, the team is six points behind the top four spots and is on the verge of qualifying for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier playoffs, which will determine four spots for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
Desai brings over 20 years of coaching experience, having previously worked with teams from the UAE, Afghanistan, and Nepal.
Following Desai’s resignation, Cricket Canada will seek a new coach. As an emerging team, it will be interesting to see how much investment the management makes in the coaching setup and who will take on the new coaching responsibilities.
