Modi Strengthens India-Malaysia Ties During Kuala Lumpur Visit

Kuala Lumpur, February 8: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Malaysia. During this trip, he held a delegation-level meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, followed by a joint press conference addressing the media.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted that Malaysia is the second-largest country with a significant Indian-origin population. He noted that both nations share cultural heritage and democratic values. Modi expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s warm welcome, mentioning that this marks his first foreign visit in 2026.

He stated that in recent years, India-Malaysia relations have gained new momentum and depth. Cooperation between the two countries has strengthened in various sectors, including energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, digital economy, biotech, IT, tourism, and people-to-people connections.

Modi emphasized the enhancement of security cooperation, counter-terrorism efforts, intelligence sharing, and maritime security between the two nations. Additionally, partnerships in AI, digital technology, semiconductors, health, and food security will be further developed.

He noted that new business and investment opportunities have emerged through the CEO Forum, which will accelerate economic transformation based on strategic trust between India and Malaysia.

The Prime Minister also recalled his meeting with Indian expatriates, stating that nearly 3 million Indian migrants serve as a “living bridge” between India and Malaysia. He mentioned initiatives like the social security agreement for migrants, free e-visas, and UPI digital payments, which will ease the lives of citizens from both countries.

Modi announced plans to enhance university exchanges, startup connections, and skill development opportunities for the youth. To support growing relations, a new consulate will be opened in Malaysia. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to development, peace, and stability across the Indo-Pacific region, prioritizing ASEAN centrality.

He emphasized the contributions of the Tamil community and culture in Malaysia, highlighting the strong presence of the Tamil language in education, media, and cultural sectors. Modi discussed efforts to bring people closer through film and music, particularly Tamil cinema, under the audiovisual agreement.

The Prime Minister reiterated that India and Malaysia are committed to development, peace, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, urging for a swift review of the ASEAN-India Trade Agreement (AITIG).

In the context of global instability, he stressed that the growing friendship between India and Malaysia is crucial for both countries. Modi affirmed continued support for all peace efforts and made it clear that there would be no double standards or compromises in the fight against terrorism.

He concluded by stating that the relationship between the two nations is robust on both strategic and humanitarian grounds. Modi thanked his Malaysian counterpart for their hospitality and expressed eagerness to welcome him to India.
