New Delhi, June 1: The demolition campaign in Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi, continues for a second day. The administration is demolishing approximately 150 illegal constructions as part of a road widening project.
Images from the area on Monday morning show multiple machines engaged in the demolition process. Several two- to three-story buildings appear to be in ruins. The operation is being conducted under heavy police and paramilitary presence to ensure security. Officials are determined to carry on with the campaign amid strict safety measures.
This demolition initiative began on Sunday, following directives from the Supreme Court. The administration has made it clear that the operation will persist until all illegal structures in the designated area are removed and land is made available for the road widening project.
According to the District Magistrate (DM) of North Central District, S.S. Parihar, the acquisition of land for planned development in Delhi began through notifications in 1959 and 1961.
The announcement for land acquisition was issued in 1966, with award numbers 40/1980-81 and 50/1980-81 declared in 1980. The land was taken over in July 1980, and the remaining compensation was also disbursed in 1981. Thus, the process of land acquisition and compensation payment was completed over four decades ago.
In 2025, a joint survey conducted by the DDA, Revenue Department, Land and Building Department, and Public Works Department utilized Total Station Method (TSM) technology for scientific demarcation of the land. The survey, conducted on January 10, revealed that hundreds of unauthorized permanent structures exist within the designated 30-meter right-of-way. Currently, the existing road occupies approximately 19.5 meters, while around 10.5 meters are obstructed due to encroachments.
