New Delhi, March 13: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of New Delhi launched state-of-the-art amphibious excavator machines on Friday to enhance the cleaning of the city’s drainage network. These machines were introduced at Badusarai Bridge, Najafgarh Drain, and Pankha Road Drain.
An official statement indicated that these machines will significantly expedite the processes of silt removal, waste clearance, and water hyacinth cleaning. This initiative aims to improve water drainage capacity and reduce flooding during the monsoon season.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the Delhi government is committed to utilizing modern technology for cleaning the city’s drains and rejuvenating the Yamuna River.
The event was attended by Delhi Cabinet Ministers Pravesh Sahib Singh and Ashish Sood, along with senior officials from the relevant departments.
CM Gupta noted that Najafgarh Drain is the largest drain in Delhi, carrying approximately 75 percent of the silt from the city’s drainage system. She mentioned that removing such a large volume of accumulated silt had been a daunting task for many years. However, the use of these modern floating machines has made this task feasible. These machines can reach deep into the drains to directly extract silt, accelerating the cleaning of long-standing sludge.
According to estimates, over 10 million metric tons of silt have accumulated in Najafgarh Drain. The newly deployed amphibious machines will be utilized to remove this substantial buildup. The Delhi government has also decided to procure additional amphibious machines.
One machine has already been delivered, while four new machines were inaugurated on Friday. The remaining machines will soon be handed over to the department.
The Chief Minister further stated that the Delhi government is now conducting silt removal operations year-round, rather than limiting them to the pre-monsoon period. This approach aims to more effectively prevent flooding during the rainy season.
