Modern Dog Shelter Launched in Dwarka, Delhi by LG Sandhu

New Delhi, July 28: The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, T.S. Sandhu, laid the foundation stone for a modern dog shelter in Dwarka on Tuesday. He promised to provide a safe space for the sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs.

In a message on the social media platform ‘X’, Sandhu stated, “Today, the foundation stone for a modern dog shelter has been laid in Sector 29, Dwarka. This initiative will be developed in collaboration with Mayor Pravesh Wahi, MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, MLA Kailash Gehlot, and other distinguished guests.”

Sandhu emphasized that the facility, spanning approximately 6,050 square meters, will offer safe shelter, care, and rehabilitation for stray dogs. It will feature modern infrastructure to ensure their welfare and well-being. Additionally, he visited the only crematorium for small animals in Delhi and advised the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to actively involve animal welfare organizations, dog lovers, veterinarians, and subject matter experts to shape these initiatives sustainably and sensitively.

The Lieutenant Governor noted, “This project is an excellent example of public-private partnership. It is being developed for the MCD at no cost, thanks to the CSR support from the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, which will strengthen Delhi’s commitment to animal welfare.”

According to rough estimates, the number of stray dogs in Delhi ranges between 800,000 to 1 million. This figure primarily pertains to the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Every year, over 25,000 cases of dog bites are reported in various hospitals across the capital.

Later, the Lieutenant Governor reviewed ongoing development projects in Aerocity near the airport. He remarked, “I visited Aerocity while returning from Dwarka. GMR officials provided details about the ongoing infrastructure development in the area, which includes sustainable urban planning, water conservation, traffic management, and last-mile metro connectivity.”

He highlighted on X the importance of close coordination with the Delhi Development Authority, given Aerocity’s proximity to Dwarka, as it is one of Delhi’s major development corridors. He stressed that all future plans should prioritize green infrastructure and sustainability to ensure the long-term and balanced development of the capital.
