Chennai, August 24: Moderate rain is expected in several districts of Tamil Nadu, including the capital Chennai, on Monday, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in certain areas of the Coimbatore and Nilgiri hill regions.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai reported a weak low-pressure system in the lower atmospheric layers over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. This system may lead to deteriorating weather conditions in parts of the state and neighboring Puducherry.
Forecasts indicate moderate rain and thunderstorms in districts along the Western Ghats, as well as Chengalpattu, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Ranipet. Similar weather is expected in parts of Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Salem, Madurai, and Tirupattur, along with strong surface winds.
The weather department stated that rainfall will be sporadic and can vary significantly from one area to another. The hill regions of Coimbatore and Nilgiri may experience heavier rainfall. Thunderstorms with heavy rain are likely in these areas on Monday and Tuesday. Residents and travelers in the hilly regions are advised to remain vigilant due to sudden weather changes, especially during thunderstorms and heavy rain.
Daytime temperatures in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to remain around normal until August 27. No significant changes in seasonal temperature patterns are anticipated, although cloud cover and intermittent rain may provide temporary relief from the heat.
Additionally, the weather department has issued a warning for rough sea conditions over the next four days. Winds may reach speeds of up to 65 kilometers per hour along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and areas around the Kanyakumari sea. Fishermen and small boat operators are advised to exercise caution and strictly follow official maritime weather advisories before venturing into affected areas.
Those already at sea should remain alert for sudden increases in wind speed and reduced visibility during rain or thunderstorms. Rainfall may also occur in other parts of the state during the forecast period.
