Lucknow, August 24: As the monsoon season begins, snakes are increasingly spotted across various regions of the country. They can be found in homes, fields, gardens, and on roads. Reports of snake bites are also emerging from several areas. In response, the National Health Mission of Uttar Pradesh has issued an advisory for immediate action against snake bites.
The National Health Mission posted on X, stating, “The first hour is crucial. A snake bite is an emergency situation, and the initial hour is considered vital. Seek medical help immediately upon noticing any symptoms, as timely treatment is key to safety.”
The advisory also outlines the symptoms of a snake bite. These include two puncture marks, bleeding or oozing from the wound, difficulty breathing, changes in skin color, alterations in voice or heaviness, and swelling, burning, and severe pain at the bite site.
The National Health Mission emphasized, “Treatment within the first hour of a snake bite is extremely important. Victims should be taken to the nearest government medical center promptly to receive timely medical assistance.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), antivenom is an effective treatment to prevent or reduce the effects of snake venom, and it is included in the WHO’s list of essential medicines. Increasing the availability of antivenom and raising awareness about prevention methods among communities and health workers is the best way to reduce severe consequences and fatalities from snake bites.
The WHO advises that if bitten by a suspected venomous snake, remove any tight items such as watches, bracelets, or rings from the bitten area to prevent complications from swelling. Keep the victim calm. Most venomous snake bites do not result in immediate death. Prevent movement and transport the victim to the nearest health center as quickly as possible.
In some cases, applying pressure with a pressure pad to the bite area may be appropriate. Avoid using traditional first aid methods or herbal remedies. Paracetamol can be given for local pain, which can be quite severe. If vomiting occurs, lay the person on their left side in the ‘recovery position.’ Monitor the airway and breathing closely, and be prepared to administer CPR if necessary.
