
Ranchi, February 28: The recent elections for 48 urban bodies in Jharkhand have resulted in a mixed mandate. Candidates supported by the BJP, Congress, and JMM have secured victories in various municipalities. Additionally, independent candidates have posed significant challenges to major political parties in several areas.
These urban body elections, held after an eight-year gap, are reshaping the local political landscape in the state.
Voting took place on February 23 for 9 municipal corporations, 20 municipal councils, and 19 town councils. The counting of votes began at 8 AM on Friday, and results for 27 urban bodies have already been declared.
In the capital, Ranchi Municipal Corporation, BJP-supported candidate Roshni Khalkho has taken a lead of nearly 30,000 votes, with Congress-supported Rama Khalkho trailing in second place.
In Hazaribagh Municipal Corporation, independent candidate Arvind Kumar Rana won the mayoral position with 23,500 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Sarfaraz Ahmed, by 4,657 votes. Jameel Akhtar has been elected as mayor in Chas Municipal Corporation.
In Jamtara Town Council, independent Asha Gupta garnered 6,880 votes, defeating the BJP-supported candidate. Somwari Soren, supported by JMM, won by a margin of 727 votes in Chakulia Town Council. Other notable victories include Arvind Gupta in Chhatarpur, BJP-supported Rani Tooti in Khunti, Arpita Das in Barharwa, and Jitendra Uraon in Bundu.
In Rajmahal, Bhavna Gupta, in Dhanwar, Vinay Kumar Santhalia, in Domchanch, Umesh Verma, and in Latehar, Mahesh Singh emerged victorious. Ramnath Paswan, Shabari Pal, and Sushil Ramani were elected as heads of the Sahebganj, Pakur, and Godda municipal councils, respectively. Anil Uraon, supported by BJP, won in Lohardaga, while Shakuntala Uraon also backed by BJP, triumphed in Gumla.
Furthermore, Sajid Hussain Lallu from Koderma, Ajay Bharti from Husseinpura, Kumari Sheila Chaudhary from Harihar Ganj, Prabodh Soren from Mahagama, Ashish Kumar Soni from Garhwa, Nitin Prakash from Chaibasa, Sunny Uraon from Chakradharpur, Jaishree Devi from Mihijam, Sunita Devi from Chirkunda, and Abhishek Chaurasia from Dumka were also elected as heads.
In Ramgarh Municipal Council, Congress-supported Kusumlata Kumari was leading until the seventh round of counting. Final results for all urban bodies are expected to be announced by Saturday.
Although the elections were conducted on a non-partisan basis, various political parties actively campaigned for their supported candidates. As a result, the outcomes for mayoral and chairperson positions are being interpreted as indicators of political influence by these parties.
