Mitchell Santner Achieves Major Milestone in T20 World Cup Final

Ahmedabad, March 8: New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has made headlines by achieving a significant record as he stepped onto the field for the T20 World Cup 2026 final against India. Santner has now joined the ranks of the Kiwi players with the most T20 World Cup matches played, tying for the top position.

This match marks Santner’s 29th appearance in the T20 World Cup, equaling the record held by Kane Williamson. Following them are Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor, who have each played 28 matches for New Zealand.

In the ongoing final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Santner won the toss and opted to invite India to bat first. The Indian team has made no changes to its lineup, while New Zealand has brought in Jacob Duffy in place of Cole McConchie.

India is aiming to secure its third T20 World Cup title, having previously won in 2007 and 2024. Meanwhile, New Zealand reached the finals in 2021 but fell to Australia in that match.

Since 2016, out of 14 knockout matches in the T20 World Cup (including semifinals and finals), teams chasing a target have won 11 times.

Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian team features Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah in this historic match.

On the other hand, Santner’s Kiwi team includes Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (wicketkeeper), Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Jacob Duffy.
