New Delhi, June 20: Former Indian fast bowler Shikha Pandey believes that the upcoming match against South Africa in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 will be a significant test for the duo of Smriti Mandhana and Shefali Verma.
The Indian team, having achieved two consecutive impressive victories in the tournament, will clash with South Africa on Sunday. Shikha emphasized the challenge posed by South Africa’s formidable pace attack, labeling it as the strongest bowling unit in the tournament. She stated to GeoStar, “The opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shefali Verma has provided India with strong starts on numerous occasions. However, they will face their toughest examination yet. South Africa’s bowling attack is the best in this Women’s T20 World Cup. Their new-ball pairing is among the most dangerous in the tournament.”
Pandey identified experienced fast bowler Shabnam Ismail and all-rounder Marizanne Kapp as the main threats. She noted, “Shabnam Ismail has made a remarkable comeback and is bowling at great pace. Marizanne Kapp has already taken three wickets against Pakistan and is bowling with excellent control. Both will test the Indian openers with swing, seam, and bounce.”
Shikha also pointed out Ayabonga Khaka’s ability to move the ball away from right-handed batsmen, adding another dimension to South Africa’s attack. The former pacer believes that Mandhana must be cautious against the moving ball.
Predicting an exciting contest between Ismail and Verma, Pandey remarked, “Smriti Mandhana has been dismissed trying to drive away from her body before, often caught in slips or behind the stumps. She needs to be wary of the moving ball.” She added, “The showdown between Shabnam Ismail and Shefali Verma will be thrilling. Shefali enjoys a challenge, and Ismail is not afraid to use bouncers.”
