Chandigarh, June 5: India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has firmly stated that the team will provide Sai Sudharsan with ample opportunities. Gambhir emphasized that Sudharsan is a world-class player, coming off a remarkable IPL 2026 season where he scored over 700 runs.
Following Gambhir’s remarks, it is almost certain that Sudharsan will take the number three position in the upcoming solitary Test match against Afghanistan. During a press conference, Gambhir remarked, “I have always believed that every player deserves enough chances to prove their abilities. Sai Sudharsan is not in poor form; he has scored more than 700 runs in IPL 2026. If we judge a player based on just four or five innings, we won’t be able to build a strong team.”
The head coach further added, “It’s not that if we test one player in five matches, we will only give another player one or two chances. However, we want to stick with Sai Sudharsan and provide him with sufficient opportunities. He is a world-class player, and I am confident he will deliver an outstanding performance.”
So far, Sudharsan has played six Test matches for India, scoring 302 runs at an average of 27 across 11 innings, including two half-centuries. The upcoming Test against Afghanistan presents a golden opportunity for Sudharsan to showcase his talent.
In IPL 2026, Sudharsan’s performance for Gujarat Titans was exceptional, amassing 722 runs at a strike rate of 157 across 17 matches. The solitary Test match between India and Afghanistan is set to take place on June 6 at the Maharaja Yadavendra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
