Paris, June 4: Mira Andreeva has secured her spot in her first Grand Slam final. She triumphed over Marta Kostyuk in the women’s singles semifinals at Roland Garros, winning 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday.
The eighth-seeded Russian player took just 76 minutes to defeat the in-form Kostyuk on Court Philippe-Chatrier, abruptly ending Kostyuk’s impressive 17-match winning streak.
At just 19 years old, Andreeva has become the youngest woman to reach a Grand Slam final since Coco Gauff’s remarkable performance at the French Open in 2022. She is also the third youngest player in the 21st century to reach the Roland Garros final, following Gauff and Kim Clijsters, who made it to the championship match at age 17 in 2001.
The significance of this victory is heightened by the fact that Andreeva had previously struggled against Kostyuk. In their last two encounters this season, including the Madrid Open final six weeks ago, the Ukrainian player had defeated Andreeva in straight sets. However, this time, the Russian player turned the tables completely.
From the outset, Andreeva maintained control of the match with her aggressive shots and exceptional agility on the court. She quickly won the first set, giving Kostyuk little opportunity to find her rhythm. The second set proved to be more competitive, but the young player remained firmly in control, forcing her opponent into errors and thwarting any hopes of a comeback.
This victory adds another remarkable chapter to Andreeva’s already impressive season. The world number 8 has emerged as one of the most consistent performers on clay in 2026, achieving over 20 wins on this surface and making significant progress in tournaments throughout the European circuit.
Her journey includes winning the title in Linz, reaching the semifinals in Stuttgart, finishing as a runner-up in Madrid, and advancing to the quarterfinals in Rome. Now, Roland Garros stands as the biggest milestone of her young career.
