Kolkata, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : A special awareness program aimed at educating consumers about their rights and protecting them from market fraud was held at the Khudiram Planning Building in Kolkata on Sunday. This event was part of the Consumer Rights Protection Week organized by the Department of Consumer Affairs. Among the attendees were Minister Dilip Ghosh, departmental officials, teachers, students, and a large number of citizens.
Minister Ghosh inaugurated the program by lighting a lamp. He stressed the importance of consumers being informed about their rights, which enables them to take appropriate action in case of fraud. He urged the public to remain vigilant while purchasing products or services and to report any instances of deception to the relevant authorities.
Speakers at the event highlighted that while there is an abundance of goods and services in the market, many consumers fall victim to fraud due to a lack of awareness. They encouraged consumers to assert their rights and file complaints instead of remaining silent in such situations.
As part of the awareness campaign, skits and live demonstrations provided crucial information related to consumer rights. One particular skit focused on the precautions to take when purchasing gold jewelry, advising consumers to check for hallmarks, purity, bills, and other essential documents. Additionally, attendees learned how and where to file complaints if issues arise after a purchase.
The program also featured demonstrations on the precautions to consider when buying and receiving LPG gas cylinders. Emphasis was placed on the importance of checking seals, weight, safety standards, and other critical factors. These presentations, based on real-life scenarios, captured the attention of both the audience and students.
A significant emphasis was placed on raising awareness among school students during the Consumer Rights Protection Week. Enthusiastic participation from students from various schools highlighted their engagement with consumer safety-related plays and demonstrations. Organizers noted that such initiatives inspire youth to become informed and responsible consumers in the future.
Speakers reiterated that consumer awareness is the most effective means of preventing fraud and financial loss. They advised individuals to verify the quality, price, bills, guarantees, warranties, and other necessary information before making any purchases. In case of fraud, they should contact the relevant department to lodge a complaint.
The event, through awareness messages, discussions, and street plays, conveyed the importance of being vigilant about consumer rights. Organizers expressed hope that such campaigns will play a vital role in making consumers more aware and alert.
