Kolkata, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Monday that the state’s economic situation is gradually improving. He attributed this positive change to the government’s decision to engage with several central schemes.
Adhikari highlighted the impact of the previous administration’s financial mismanagement and corruption, which he claimed pushed the state’s economy to the brink of bankruptcy. He noted that the former government’s reluctance to participate in various centrally sponsored schemes exacerbated the situation.
While acknowledging that the state’s economy has not fully recovered, Adhikari expressed optimism that it could take about a year to emerge from the economic crisis. He emphasized that there are signs of improvement, thanks to the state’s inclusion in different central programs, which has resulted in increased funding.
The Chief Minister made these remarks during an event marking the distribution of enhanced pensions for the elderly, widows, and persons with disabilities. Previously, beneficiaries received ₹1,000 monthly, but as of Monday, this amount has been raised to ₹1,500.
Adhikari mentioned that the new BJP-led state government has implemented measures to curb revenue losses, projecting an 18% improvement in the state’s tax revenue. He expressed confidence that these efforts would further enhance the state’s revenue generation.
Additionally, Adhikari stated that his government is focusing on identifying fraudulent beneficiaries within various welfare schemes. He affirmed, “Our goal is to ensure that only genuine beneficiaries receive these benefits.” He also announced the cancellation of the previous government’s waiting lists for beneficiaries, stating that all such lists are null and void as of today. New welfare camps will be set up for individuals to reapply.
