Hyderabad, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : On September 7, tensions flared at the main entrance of the Telangana Assembly in Hyderabad as members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) clashed with police on the first day of the monsoon session. The confrontation erupted during a protest by BRS leaders, leading to the detention of prominent figures including K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao.
The police intervened to stop BRS legislators and councilors who wore T-shirts emblazoned with slogans opposing the state government‘s unfulfilled promises. Officers insisted that wearing such attire was prohibited within the assembly, triggering a heated argument that escalated into physical altercations.
BRS representatives claimed that during the scuffle, K.T. Rama Rao, Jagdish Reddy, and Sunita Reddy sustained minor injuries. Harish Rao fell during the fray, and Sunita Reddy was reportedly left in tears after police allegedly tore her saree and subjected her to humiliation.
The BRS accused police of misconduct, alleging that officers pulled the hair of former minister Sabita Indra Reddy. Amid the chaos, Jagdish Reddy fainted, prompting K.T. Rama Rao and Harish Rao to remove their T-shirts in protest, revealing their undershirts. Subsequently, police forcibly removed the protesting legislators from the scene.
BRS leaders expressed outrage over the treatment meted out to Harish Rao, criticizing police for their “undemocratic” behavior. They argued that the police disregarded their status as opposition leaders. The BRS claimed that the government resorted to violence and arrests out of fear of accountability.
The opposition party further alleged that police behaved inappropriately during the arrest of K.T. Rama Rao, forcibly placing him in a vehicle. Legislators including Talsani Srinivas Yadav, Sabita Indra Reddy, Sunita Reddy, Kova Lakshmi, and Madhavaram Krishna Rao staged a sit-in at the assembly gate to protest against the police’s actions.
K.T. Rama Rao voiced his anger at the government’s response, questioning why he was stopped when opposition leader Rahul Gandhi could wear a black T-shirt in Parliament to protest. He stated that they were merely seeking answers regarding unfulfilled promises made during the 2023 elections. Shortly after, K.T. Rama Rao, Harish Rao, and other party leaders returned to their headquarters, where the BRS called for statewide demonstrations against the government’s actions that hindered their legislators from participating in the assembly session.
K.T. Rama Rao accused the state government of betraying all sections of society by failing to meet its commitments, asserting that it has not fulfilled 420 promises, six guarantees, or 13 declarations.
Tensions remain high as the BRS prepares to escalate its protests across the state.
