Paris, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : South Korean President Lee Jae-myung reiterated his commitment to play a proactive role in rekindling stalled negotiations between North Korea and the United States. He emphasized that South Korea aims to act as a “peacemaker” to restore dialogue and work towards halting the expansion of North Korea’s nuclear program.
In a written interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, published on September 7, Lee made these remarks during his four-day visit to France, which began in Nice. A summit with French President Emmanuel Macron is also scheduled during his trip to Paris.
Lee expressed his desire to serve as a catalyst in revitalizing US-North Korea talks, believing that re-establishing communication could pave the way to limit Pyongyang’s nuclear capabilities. He acknowledged the challenges, stating that the “wall of distrust” cannot be dismantled overnight through mere measures.
The president reiterated his government’s policy of “peaceful coexistence” with North Korea, aimed at reducing tensions and fostering peace between the two Koreas. He also referenced recent comments by US President Donald Trump regarding South Korea, clarifying that these remarks do not threaten the stability of the alliance but reflect a shift to meet the evolving demands of the times.
Lee underscored that South Korea is enhancing its role in the alliance by increasing defense spending and strengthening its military capabilities.
