Papua, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : A fierce fire erupted early Monday morning in a market located in Paniai, Central Papua, Indonesia, leading to the tragic deaths of 11 individuals, among them six children.
The blaze quickly spread to nearby shops and homes. Despite the efforts of firefighters, who deployed fire trucks and water cannons, the flames raged for over three hours. Local police spokesperson Henry J. Manurung reported that victims were found at the scene, all severely burned. The deceased included five adults and six children aged between two and nine years.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which affected approximately 40 buildings in the area. The close proximity of the market and surrounding structures made it challenging for firefighters to control the inferno. Manurung stated, “The rapid spread of the fire and the closeness of the homes and stalls significantly delayed the firefighting efforts.”
Police are actively seeking answers, gathering information from eyewitnesses to understand the circumstances surrounding this horrific incident that occurred shortly after midnight.
Indonesia has witnessed similar tragedies in the past. In December 2025, a fire in a seven-story office building in Central Jakarta claimed 22 lives, caused by a drone battery explosion on the ground floor. In 2023, another catastrophic event occurred at a nickel-processing plant in Eastern Indonesia, where a powerful explosion resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals.
