Shillong, August 7: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed the progress of the state’s ambitious ‘Tracing the Roots’ initiative on Friday.
This interdisciplinary research project aims to document the history, culture, language, and heritage of the state’s indigenous communities through scientific and academic research.
During the review meeting, the Chief Minister engaged in detailed discussions with the committee formed to guide the project and assessed the implementation roadmap led by the Department of Arts and Culture.
The initiative seeks to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based understanding of the origins and historical development of Meghalaya’s indigenous communities by combining traditional knowledge with modern research methodologies.
According to officials, this initiative will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, integrating historical research, oral traditions, indigenous knowledge systems, linguistics, archaeology, and, where appropriate, genetic studies to explore various theories related to the origins and migrations of indigenous communities in the state.
In addition to tracing historical developments, the project will document traditional institutions, festivals, material culture, and the vitality of indigenous languages. It aims to create a sustainable digital archive to preserve cultural resources and historical records for future generations.
Sangma emphasized that the initiative’s goal is to develop a scientifically reliable and evidence-supported understanding of Meghalaya’s indigenous heritage while safeguarding oral histories and traditional cultural practices that are integral to the state’s identity.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that preliminary work for this initiative has been underway since February. This includes forming research teams, outlining the project, documenting research progress, preserving knowledge resources, and developing a dedicated digital platform to facilitate public participation during the study.
The government also plans to collaborate with leading national and international academic institutions for comparative historical, linguistic, and cultural research. This initiative is expected to yield research publications, educational resources, and a comprehensive digital repository that will be beneficial for researchers, policymakers, and academic institutions.
The state government stated that the ‘Tracing the Roots’ initiative aims to preserve Meghalaya’s rich indigenous heritage through in-depth academic research, strengthen cultural identity, and create a lasting repository of knowledge for future generations.
