New Delhi, August 31: In Indian tradition, yoga asanas, pranayama, and mudras hold significant importance. They not only promote physical health but also help in achieving mental focus, tranquility, and balance. Among various yoga postures, ‘Mahamudra’ occupies a special place. It contributes to maintaining bodily health and energizing the nervous system.
‘Mahamudra’ is a crucial and ancient practice in Hatha Yoga, often referred to as the ‘Great Gesture.’ The term ‘Maha’ originates from Sanskrit, meaning ‘gesture,’ ‘mudra,’ or ‘mental state.’ Thus, this mudra is also known as the ‘Great Symbol’ or ‘Great Seal.’
In yoga scriptures, ‘Mahamudra’ is described as the ‘Stairway to Immortality,’ indicating that this practice detoxifies the body and fills it with new energy.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH and yogic traditions, ‘Mahamudra’ is an advanced Hatha Yoga practice that is highly effective for mental peace, balancing physical energy, and spiritual growth. It is believed to help reduce stress and improve blood circulation.
This practice represents the harmony of the Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna nadis, leading to spiritual awakening. Performing this asana exerts pressure on all organs related to the digestive system, making them more active and healthy. Additionally, it accelerates metabolism, ensuring efficient digestion and sustained energy levels.
Mahamudra stretches and strengthens the pelvic floor, spine, and hamstring muscles, enhancing both flexibility and strength in the body. Furthermore, it aids in balancing diabetes. Regular practice helps regulate insulin production and maintain blood sugar levels.
However, it is essential to perform this practice on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning. Individuals with high blood pressure, glaucoma, severe hernias, pregnancy, or menstruation should avoid this practice. Those with severe back pain or issues should consult a specialist before attempting it.
