Manipurs Tamenglong District Set to Revolutionize Honey Production Under PMs Scheme

Mumbai, March 19: Tamenglong district in Manipur is making significant strides towards revolutionizing honey production. Under the Prime Minister’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhan Yojana’ (PMDDKY), this district has been included among the 100 aspirational agricultural districts in the country, aiming for maximum honey production through scientific beekeeping and breeding techniques.

The PMDDKY was approved by the central cabinet on July 16, 2025, for a duration of six years (2025-26 to 2030-31). It focuses on 100 districts characterized by low productivity, moderate crop intensity, and limited credit distribution. Inspired by the NITI Aayog’s aspirational district program, the initiative aims to enhance agricultural productivity, diversify crops, promote sustainable agriculture, improve storage and irrigation at the panchayat/block level, and increase loan availability. Tamenglong is the only district in Manipur to be included in this list.

The district administration is collaborating with Humble Bee Venture Private Limited (Ambernath, Thane, Maharashtra) and the Hill Beekeepers Association (Tamenglong) to implement the project. In the first phase, 100 farmers have been selected to receive beehives, scientific equipment, and goods worth ₹8,000. So far, 500 boxes have arrived in the district, and training has commenced.

Armstrong Pame, IAS, the Joint Secretary of the Higher Education Department and the Central Nodal Officer (CNO) for Tamenglong, stated that funds have been raised through CSR contributions since the district was declared ‘aspirational.’ The goal is to achieve a minimum production of 1,000 liters of honey each month.

On March 17, 2026, a program was organized at the Gadaillong Horticulture Farm by the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation. Starting March 18, beekeeping grafting (breeding) is being conducted under the leadership of Vaibhav Trimukhe, co-founder and COO of Humble Bee. Trimukhe emphasized, “Humble Bee is enhancing farmers’ capabilities through scientific beekeeping. By adopting modern techniques over traditional methods, we will increase honey production and income.”

This project leverages the dense forests and biodiversity of Tamenglong. It ensures the health, productivity, and sustainability of bees through scientific methods. This initiative is expected to boost farmers’ incomes, improve pollination, and contribute to environmental conservation.

The district administration is conducting regular reviews. This initiative is crucial for realizing the objectives of PMDDKY, which include enhancing agricultural productivity and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
