New Delhi, June 20: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has stressed the importance of technological agility, strategic foresight, and institutional innovation to maintain robust preparedness amid the uncertainties of the current global order. Speaking with troops at the Eastern Air Command headquarters in Shillong, Meghalaya, on June 20, 2026, Singh highlighted that the evolving nature of warfare includes hybrid threats, cyber challenges, information warfare, logistics capacity, supply chain security, and drone warfare. In this context, he asserted that traditional preparations alone are insufficient for the defense forces.
Singh reiterated the necessity for India to become ‘self-reliant’ to ensure national security on its own terms. He noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the country’s self-reliance efforts have led to the historic success of ‘Operation Sindoor.’ He stated that through this operation, India demonstrated that it would not compromise on its security and sovereignty. The capability, vigilance, and determination of our defense forces have once again showcased India’s rising strength to the world. Organizations like the Eastern Air Command have emerged as active partners in this comprehensive national vision.
The Defense Minister praised the Eastern Air Command as a crucial pillar of security for India’s eastern border, acknowledging its significant role in strengthening national security. He remarked that whether in combat, during peacetime deployments, disaster response, operations in high-altitude areas, or border management, the Eastern Air Command has consistently exhibited professionalism, courage, and commitment in every situation.
Singh commended the brave soldiers for efficiently fulfilling their duties under challenging circumstances. He emphasized that it is their sacrifice, dedication, and commitment to duty that allow citizens to live safely. Furthermore, he recognized that they are always the first to respond in times of natural disasters or crises. This dedication to humanity and national service is their true identity, and the nation will always remain indebted to their service.
Discussing the significance of the operational area of the Eastern Air Command, the Defense Minister stated that the Northeast is not just a geographical boundary but a vital pillar of India’s security, prosperity, and strategic strength. He mentioned that this region is a key component of India’s Act East Policy. As India strengthens its role on the global stage, the importance of the Northeast has only increased.
Concluding his address, Singh described the defense forces as a symbol of national unity. He noted that soldiers embody a culture where diverse ideas flourish, core values remain intact, and mutual respect naturally thrives. He added that the increasing role of women in the defense forces is more than just institutional progress; it reflects the cultural values for which India is known worldwide. This indicates that while we embrace modernity, our culture remains firmly rooted in its fundamental principles.
Present at the event were Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia, the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Air Command, and other senior officials of the Indian Air Force.
