New Delhi, February 22: The BJP legislator from Manipur’s Thanlon assembly constituency, Vungzagin Walte, passed away on Saturday. Upon hearing the news, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh promptly traveled to New Delhi to pay his respects to the late leader. Many other political figures have also expressed their condolences.
Walte represented the Kuki-Zo community from the Churachandpur district. He sustained serious injuries during ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Following a meeting with former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on May 4, 2023, he was attacked by a mob in the Nagamapal area. This brutal assault left him with multiple severe injuries and resulted in partial paralysis. His driver also lost his life in the attack.
After his critical injuries, he was airlifted to Delhi, where he underwent extensive treatment in several hospitals. In the following months, he continued his recovery in Churachandpur, gradually improving his health.
However, his condition worsened recently, leading to his airlift from Imphal to New Delhi on February 8. This arrangement was made under the guidance of the new government led by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, ensuring he received advanced medical care. Unfortunately, despite all efforts, he passed away.
The Chief Minister departed for Delhi this afternoon upon receiving the heartbreaking news and paid his final respects to the deceased legislator.
Walte had previously urged members of his community to maintain unity amid the ongoing ethnic crisis in Manipur. His passing has left a wave of grief in the state’s political landscape, particularly within the tribal community.
