Silchar, June 22: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized a large quantity of opium seeds valued at approximately ₹1.31 crore in Cachar district. This operation was conducted based on reliable intelligence.
The team intercepted a truck on Silchar Bypass Road late Saturday evening and conducted a thorough search. During the inspection, they discovered 8,764 kilograms of opium seeds, estimated to be worth ₹1.31 crore. Two local residents were also taken into custody.
Authorities confiscated the truck and two mobile phones believed to have been used in the smuggling operation. The seized opium seeds have been handed over to the DRI for further investigation.
Officials stated that the Assam Rifles and DRI are continuously conducting joint operations in the region to dismantle drug trafficking networks. This operation is considered a significant success in that effort.
Previously, as part of a coordinated campaign against smuggling in the northeastern region, the DRI seized over 7.1 million sticks of smuggled cigarettes in two months, with an estimated market value of around ₹14 crore.
Following the recovery of foreign-origin cigarettes in May and June, the DRI team apprehended suspects linked to this smuggling racket. A total of four individuals have been detained. On June 11, the DRI seized more than 4.5 million sticks of foreign-origin cigarettes in Mizoram, with assistance from the 34th Battalion of the Assam Rifles. One person was arrested in this case.
In another similar operation, over 7.1 million sticks of smuggled cigarettes were seized, valued at ₹14 crore.
