In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, PM Modi wrote, “Happy birthday to Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. I wish him a long and healthy life.”
Born on June 22, 1974, in Chennai, Vijay transitioned from a successful actor to a politician and currently serves as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Before entering politics, he was one of the most prominent stars in Tamil cinema, affectionately known as ‘Thalapathy’ by his fans.
Vijay’s full name is Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar. He is the son of filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar and singer Shobha Chandrasekhar. He began his acting career as a child artist in the film ‘Vetri’ (1984), directed by his father, and later emerged as a leading star in the Tamil film industry.
He established himself as one of the biggest names in South Indian cinema, with significant contributions to his popularity from films like ‘Kushi’, ‘Thirumalai’, ‘Ghilli’, ‘Pokiri’, and ‘Sarkar’. Initially recognized for his romantic roles, he later transformed into an action star known for portraying characters that fight for social and political justice.
Due to his immense popularity among fans, he is often compared to legendary Tamil actors who successfully ventured into politics. Many of his films hinted at political themes, suggesting his future political ambitions.
In 2024, Vijay founded the ‘Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) party and formally entered politics. The party performed impressively in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, emerging as the largest party in the state. TVK secured victory in 108 out of the 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
After falling short of a majority, TVK formed an alliance with Congress and other parties. Subsequently, Joseph Vijay took the oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10.
