Imphal, April 26: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has urged the families of two children killed in a bombing in Bishnupur district to accept their bodies, which have been in the morgue for 19 days.
On April 7, a powerful bomb was thrown at their home in Tronglaobi village while the victims were asleep. The attack resulted in the deaths of a 5-year-old boy and his 6-month-old sister, while their mother sustained serious injuries.
The victims’ families previously stated they would not accept the bodies until those responsible for the attack were identified, arrested, and punished.
On Saturday, thousands of people, including many women, participated in a protest rally organized by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) in various parts of the Imphal Valley. COCOMI is a leading organization representing the Meitei community.
The rally proceeded toward the western gate of Kangla Fort, where protesters faced intermittent resistance from security forces.
After meeting with a COCOMI delegation, the Chief Minister stated that security agencies are conducting round-the-clock operations to identify and apprehend the criminals. He expressed deep sorrow that the bodies of the two children remain in the morgue.
He also mentioned that the case has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Alongside Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, the Chief Minister reiterated that the state government is always open to dialogue with all organizations and hopes for cooperation to restore peace and harmony in Manipur.
He noted that the ongoing movement, prolonged shutdowns, and unrest have severely impacted all sections of society, especially daily wage workers, traders, and students.
Describing the killings of the two children and a recent attack in Ukhrul district that claimed the lives of two Naga civilians as inhumane acts, Singh stated that these incidents have instilled fear and anger among the people.
Earlier in the day, a large number of men and women protested in Imphal, demanding justice for the slain children, rehabilitation for the displaced, and the restoration of lasting peace in the state.
Participants from various parts of the valley joined the rally organized by COCOMI. Protesters attempting to march toward the Chief Minister’s residence were stopped by security forces at several locations.
According to a police officer, security personnel used tear gas after protesters attempted to break through barricades.
Subsequently, a delegation of protesters was allowed to meet with the Chief Minister and submit a memorandum outlining their demands.
Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh stated that the memorandum submitted by COCOMI included seven key issues and demands, assuring that the government is committed to the safety of indigenous communities.
He further stated that both the Bishnupur bombing and the attack in Ukhrul on April 18 have been assigned to the NIA for investigation.
As part of the ongoing investigation, a team from the NIA, led by an Inspector General, has also visited the bombing site in Tronglaobi village.
