
Mumbai, February 18: A shocking incident involving a man traveling in a burqa on a local train in Mumbai came to light on February 6. The individual was spotted in a women’s coach but managed to escape when the train stopped. He has since been apprehended.
A video of the man went viral on social media. Women passengers attempted to detain him, but he evaded capture by jumping off the train. The man’s identity remained unknown until the police began investigating the case following the video’s release.
According to Dr. Swapnil Nila, the Chief Public Relations Officer at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the man was seen traveling in the women’s second-class compartment of a Karjat local train at Ghatkopar station. He fled the scene by exiting the platform in the opposite direction.
Using CCTV footage, authorities identified and traced the suspect, who was arrested in Nashik. The accused has been identified as Altaf Hussain Sheikh, 57, a resident of Nashik. During questioning, it was revealed that he has been mentally unwell and has been receiving treatment at various hospitals since 2022.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Ghatkopar for further action.
Central Railway has urged male passengers not to enter or travel in compartments reserved for women. Those found violating this rule will face punitive action under the Railway Act. Additionally, Central Railway encourages passengers to report any unusual incidents to the nearest railway staff or call the helpline number 139.
