
Hyderabad, April 2: In a significant crackdown against adulterated and unhygienic food products, the Hyderabad police seized approximately 12 tons of spoiled meat, specifically sheep and goat offal, valued at around 1 million rupees. This operation took place on Thursday as part of an ongoing campaign.
The Golconda team of the Commissioner’s Task Force, in collaboration with the H-Fast team and the Mangalhat police, raided a warehouse in Mangalhat and arrested the manager, Rafi Ahmed.
Recently, the Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team was established under the leadership of Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar. According to Additional Deputy Commissioner A. Srinivas Rao, the shop owner, Mohammad Afroz, is currently on the run.
The seized meat included heads, brains, kidneys, and livers. The accused had been purchasing spoiled meat at low prices from wholesale markets and storing it for extended periods in deep freezers and dirty water-filled plastic tubs. This meat was then sold at weddings, events, and hotels, posing a serious health risk to the public.
A case has been registered at the Mangalhat police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 125, 271, 318(2), and 112.
In another operation, the Golconda Task Force team, along with the Tappachabutra police, raided a bakery located in Nataraj Nagar, Zhirra. Here, bakery products were being made under unsanitary conditions without a license.
The police arrested a person named Syed Khadeer and seized goods worth approximately 277,000 rupees, including flour, Dalda, sugar, coconut powder, and cake powder. A case has been registered at the Tappachabutra police station under IPC sections 274, 275, and 318(4).
Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar held a meeting with food business operators on Thursday, issuing a stern warning that endangering lives for personal gain will not be tolerated. He stated that food adulteration is an attack on society, and strict legal action will be taken against those involved.
Around 200 business operators from various sectors, including meat, dairy, bakery, ginger-garlic paste, and tea powder, attended the meeting. Sajjanar reported that in the past month, 92 cases have been registered in the city, leading to the seizure of approximately 62 tons of adulterated food products and the arrest of 98 individuals.
He advised all business operators to act as responsible citizens and not compromise on food quality. Additionally, he emphasized that obtaining an FSSAI license is mandatory for every food business operator and urged the public to report any instances of adulteration to the police immediately.
